Technology is changing rapidly and each year brings us some new trends. Here are the top development trends for 2020.

1. Progressive Web Apps (PWA)

A recent study about mobile usage is showing that mobile apps account for 89% of total mobile media time. Knowing that, target audience would receive well a similar mobile app format. Progressive Web Apps (PWA) are web applications that can appear to users like a mobile application but are web pages or websites actually. They aim to bring native-like experience to users of all platforms and all devices. According to Google report, 53% of mobile site visits are abandoned if it takes longer than three seconds for them to load. Progressive Web Apps solve this problem well. PWA combines the best of the web and native applications and users get full app experience without even installing an app.

Some of the biggest brands in the world already saw the benefits. Forbes’ PWA increased impressions per visit by 10%. Alibaba increased mobile conversions by 76% and Twitter saw a 20% decrease in bounce rate.

PWA is giving you full-screen experience (since URL is not shown), so brand identity is more visible and much stronger. To mimic the native app experience, PWA is using push notification. You, as a publisher, have a full control over when and what you want to ‘push’ to users. This is helping your users to re-engage to the site in a way normal websites can’t. You can share web content with any app that is on your device- you are not limited to the most likely apps such as Facebook and Twitter for example.

All this PWA can do offline- no need for the Internet connection and you will always have the latest version! Your content is always going to be available even if you have a poor connection.

2. Single page website

Websites have two main types: multi-page affairs, and one-page setups. The traditional path in building a website is to put each topic on its own page. Taking into consideration how people read you should minimize the amount of the text on your webpage to improve conversion rates.

The biggest advantage of a single page website is simplicity. There is no complex navigation or deep menu to pass over. Large number of users favor browsing the Net on their mobile devices as opposed to their desktop computers. Single web page design works well on mobile devices, where scrolling is a common navigation method. This style provides you with a modern solution to simplify your online needs and it is inexpensive to develop and host.

3. Static web page

First web pages were static while those used today are mainly dynamic. Nowadays, the web is returning to its roots and static websites are becoming the web development trend again. You code each page in HTML and it displays the same fixed or static content to every user. The main advantage of a static web page is a simplicity. It doesn’t challenge you with complex navigation, multi level navigation and tons of text- the only thing that you should do is to scroll down. These websites are safe, they load fast and are inexpensive to make. A static web page is simple and focuses on your text and allows you to create a unique user journey.

4. Push notification

Push notifications are one of the most powerful tools that a mobile app has. On the websites, push notifications provide a way to notify you when new content is available, without requiring you to check your email or browse the site in question. Push notifications are similar to popups but unlike them can reach you anytime, anywhere, no matter if you are currently on a particular website or not. With this, you have an extra channel in your marketing mix. The major benefit is obvious — you can keep the user engaged without big efforts. Another impact is a higher clicking rate since they are clickable and give higher results than a regular email marketing campaign.

5. Motion UI

Since even the best-looking design can be rather pointless if you can’t find the information you need, an interface has been a top concern to developers for years. Following the trends of simplifying processes, UI moved towards motion UI that keeps site simple, without flashy advertisements. In this way, you can add a life to your minimalistic site. Adding motion UI elements into your website can boost user engagement as it encourages active user interaction and enhances site usability. This technology offers a high degree of customization, which will give your developer many options to craft a functional and stunning site that will stand out among thousands of others with static UI.
