A sophisticated menu, quick and attentive service, and a heated, outside terrace in the sunshine –what more could you want from a lunch break?
Anyone who works in an office will tell you how good it can feel to get out and away from the desk. It clears your mind and helps refocus for the rest of day. While a quick break usually does the trick for me, some days call for a delicious gourmet lunch date. Today was one of them.
La Cabane on Port Camille Rayon in Golfe Juan is a little-known, yet high quality restaurant serving at lunchtime and during the evening in winter months (in summer it is open right through the day). The prices are higher than you’d pay in the neighbouring restaurants, but the level of creativity and taste in the plates on offer also far exceeds its contemporaries.
It is one restaurant that never disappoints in its plat du jour. From freshly-caught fish to an excellent vegetarian salad with huge on-the-vine capers or shoulder of lamb with fresh chive mashed potato and lightly sautéed vegetables, here the 16€ plate of the day is always changing unlike some restaurants that run the same option every day. For months on end.
Outside of this and there is a menu with something for every taste bud. I usually plump for the grilled sea bass (a little pricey at 24€, but almost irresistible), the lime and ginger-infused chicken Caesar salad or their oozing, cheese and pine nut ravioli if the daily menu doesn’t grab me, but I’ve seen on other diners’ plates how well La Cabane’s gourmet burgers go down too!
What sells it for me is that you really can taste the freshness of the ingredients and see the care that goes into these beautifully presented meals – that coupled with a smiley, friendly and comfortable service, which can be difficult to find in many of my local restaurants.
Only a short walk from my office and the train station, the location and speed and attentiveness of the waiter and waitress make it the ideal destination for low key meetings and lunches with colleagues. My only complaint is that they no longer offer a delivery service at lunch (I think I bothered the maîtresse for one of her gourmet salad one too many times on her day off, which is a Thursday by the way)!
