There are tons of restaurant in Nice, especially near the beach and in the old town. The hungry visitor might tend to just pick a random restaurant. My advice: Please don’t!
There are a lot very average or even bad restaurant in Nice. Especially the places located in the touristy areas are highly overpriced and in most cases not worth the money! After a couple of months of intense field studies, two lovely restaurants made their way to the top of my list! They definitely stand out between all the places, where you will hardly hear a French word from the guests and still have to pay a horrendous price for a “typical Nicoise meal“.
Let’s start with Blue Whales – Burgerlicious!
There are quite a few good burger places in Nice, but Blue Whales definitely has the best ones! It’s only 11€ for a burger and fries, if you want to get the cheese fries (which you definitely should) it’s one Euro extra. You will find a great variety of beef and chicken burgers and two different (really good) vegetarian burgers. My suggestion: the soja burger! It is literally the best vegetarian burger I ever had. The menu also contains a couple of starters and salads as well as desserts.
The places is divided in the actual restaurant with cool american-diner style and the bar, which was renovated last year. Located in the old town of Nice (Rue Mascoinat), it is popular for locals as well as tourists.
Don’t feel like going home after your meal? Luckily Blue Whales is not only a diner but also a bar with absolutely great, unusual cocktails and live music. Try to go during Happy Hour (9-11 pm) and get a cocktail for only 6€. Not sure which one to get? Everybody loves the San Diego!
For all those, who don’t drink alcohol but still want to have a good time with their friends, Blue Whales has a variety of “Mocktails“. Served and decorated in a nice jar and at least as tasty as the proper cocktails, they are a good alternative! During Happy Hour it is only 3€ for a Mocktail. Try the Raspberry Cooler!
Burgers and Cocktails are served until 4am (yes, you read correctly)! Since the sidewalks are rolled up in Nice after 2 am, Blue Whales is the place to be for all hungry night owls.
If you are not that much of a night person or already have different dinner plans, don’t worry! Blue Whales also serves breakfast from 9am to 11:30am and brunch on Saturday and Sunday until 6pm.
It can get quite busy, especially on the weekends and sometimes the staff gets a bit stressed, just be patient, it’s worth the wait!
